DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Johann Spitznagel, Olmütz, very rare early self-winding watch with 4-year perpetual calendar retrograde day and date sectors, 53mm, silver OF case stamped inside "Carl Wagner," white enamel dial with sector to lower portion for retrograde day, sector to upper portion for retrograde date, self-winding and keyset (key not included with this lot), cylinder escapement, large gilt and steel self-winding weight located between plates, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled two-footed balance bridge, s#175. A fascinating early self-winding watch with self-winding mechanism designed to function when the watch is pendant-up and the watch is jostled in the vertical plane. A previous owner noted that this movement is equipped on its back plate with an anti-overwind mechanism and that the case is believed to be of slightly later vintage. This present piece was previously handled by us in Fall of 2023 and at that time was having significant issues with its calendar function, our current consignor had the watch serviced for this issue and it is substantially improved as noted in its present condition report.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, day and date advancing properly as hands set forward, retrograde reset is functioning but date hand has a bit of play in its fit which occasionally causes contact with hour hand and results in an incomplete reset which must then be coaxed along to its full reset position, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; dial with hl at 6 below day hand, some surface scrapes to areas above-right of center and below 1, few scattered very short surface scratches and tiny nicks elsewhere; fine hands, minute with finish loss; case shows little wear, a moderate patina, ding to band at 7; tight bow; good domed glass bull's-eye crystal with some glue excess at its seat.
